  • Cape Hatteras is the TALLEST brick lighthouse in America.

  • Is among the ranks of Historic National Landmarks, for its history, architectural detail, and contribution to the nation as an icon of lighthouses (Robers, Shelton-Roberts, and Yocum, pg 32).

  • The Cape Hatteras we know today was completed in 1870.

  • There are approximately 264 steps from the base to the look-out tower (calculated number of steps range from 248 to 286). Either way, it is said that its like "climbing a 12-story building -- with no air conditioning".

  • The lighthouse was MOVED in 1999.
